What Are Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators, also known as botulinum toxin type A such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, are injectable medications used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. They work by blocking the release of acetylcholine in the muscle that causes it to contract. By reducing muscle activity, they help soften wrinkles while maintaining a natural look.

Good candidates for neuromodulator treatment are people who want to target specific areas on their faces with management of premature lines or wrinkles caused by repeated facial expression or smothering due to sun damage or aging. Neuromodulators can also be effective at treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

The effects of neuromodulator treatments typically last 3-4 months, but it could be longer or shorter depending on the individual. After repeated treatments, muscle memory may cause results to last longer. At Andaar Derma Aesthetics, we offer complimentary follow up appointments so that our experienced clinicians can ensure you are getting optimal results from your treatment.

Botox vs. Dysport

Botox and Dysport are both injectable neurotoxins used for cosmetic purposes, specifically in the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines. Although they share similarities in their composition and mode of action, there are some key differences between the two.

1. Active Ingredient: Both Botox and Dysport contain Botulinum toxin type A as their primary active ingredient. This neurotoxin temporarily weakens or paralyzes the muscles responsible for creating wrinkles, resulting in a smoother, more youthful appearance. However, the formulations of these two products are slightly different, which can affect their potency and the way they spread once injected.

2. Diffusion: Dysport is known to have a more diluted formula and tends to spread more once injected. This can be beneficial in treating larger areas with fewer injections, but it may also increase the risk of affecting unintended muscles. Botox, on the other hand, has a more concentrated formula and remains more localized at the injection site, allowing for more precise targeting of specific muscle groups.

3. Onset and Duration of Results: Dysport has a slightly faster onset of action than Botox, with results becoming visible within 2-3 days, while Botox typically takes 3-5 days to show noticeable effects. The duration of results for both products is generally similar, lasting around 3-6 months. However, individual experiences may vary, and some patients may find that one product lasts longer for them than the other.

Everything You Need To Know

  • What areas can be treated?

Neurmodulators are a popular cosmetic treatment used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It can be used on areas such as the forehead, around the eyes, in between the eyebrows, and around the mouth. It is a safe and relatively non-invasive procedure that can be performed in an outpatient setting.

Botox can also be used to treat certain medical conditions including chronic migraines, excessive sweating, eye muscle spasms and neck muscle problems. While it is primarily used for its cosmetic benefits, it remains an excellent solution for those that are suffering from related medical conditions as well.

  • How often should I book an appointment?

How often you need to get a neuromodulator treatment depends on a variety of factors. Your individual needs, the type of injection, and your body’s metabolism may all affect how long the results last. Most people need to come in for between one and four treatments per year, depending on their desired effect.

With regular touch-up injections or occasional follow-up treatments during the year, you can preserve the look and feel of your neuromodulator treatment long term.

  • Is there any down time after neuromodulator treatments?

Neuromodulators are generally considered safe and gentle procedures with minimal side effects and downtime. Patients may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the site of injection. However, these side effects generally resolve within a few days to a week and can be managed with over-the-counter medications or topical ointments.
